Preparation of guides feet
All guides feet should be checked before wrapping. Most will benefit from same dressing.
Any rough spots on the under side of guides feet may ,in time , damage and weaken the blank , and finally result in a mysterious break. Consider for a moment the rather obvious fact the blanks bend on each and every cast. It also change configuration slightly from round to oval, then back to round, each time is flexed.
The metal feet of the guide do not bend exactly the same with the rod( blank).
Therefore, there is a tiny amount of movement between the guide and the blank. If the bottoms of the guide feet are not silky-smooth, abrasion will take place. A rough spot of metal will, from thousands and thousands of cast, dig into blank. This movement between the two parts is aloso the reason should not be wrapped under heavy thread tension.
Tension up near the bracking point of thread will cause the guide to dig itself the blank an ,in time, cause the wall to collapse.
If you doubt that movement between the two parts exists, or is significant, the following examination may convert you. Take a medium- light rod that has seen good service for a year or two. To make it easier to find we`re looking for, select one that has guides of average stiffness and preferably received a rather thick coat of finish over the wraps.
Now examine the finish at the point just next to and beyond the edge of the guide feet.
The chances are excellent that you will find small cracks and checks in the finish. They occur at that particular point, since that is where the end of the guide foot is moving the greatest distance on each cast. It is alternately being levered up and down, back and forth – and the finish is constantly being put under stress, causing it to crack and check as it breaks down.

Basic wrapping techniques
Wrapping ferrules
In order to kep the bulk ( O.D) to a minimum. either size ,,00,, or ,,A,, thread is used. The most aspect of the wrap is the thread tension.
Do not use a lot of tension or you will contrict the size ( or opening) of the female ferrule.
When that happens, the male section will not penetrate as far as it should, and a potential shear point is created where the rod may break.

,,To adjust the thread tension , place the spool of thread in a coffe cup behing a large open book. Pull off a meter of thread and close the bok an the thread.
Additional tensional if needed can be provided by pilling more books on top.
However most beginners apply more tension, which can it damage the blank.
After the guides are wrapped you should be able to move them just enough for final alignment with the tip-top.
